Physio at home

What is physio at home?

Physio at home, also called mobile physiotherapy or domiciliary physiotherapy, is regular physiotherapy delivered where you live instead of in a clinic. The treatment itself is the same as in a practice: assessment, treatment plan, hands-on therapy and a personal exercise programme. The difference is the setting, and for many patients that is exactly the point. Your physiotherapist sees the stairs you actually need to climb and the bathroom where you feel unsteady, and trains you in the environment where you need to function.

In Switzerland, home treatment is a recognised part of the healthcare system. If your doctor confirms on the prescription that treatment at home is medically necessary, your basic health insurance (Grundversicherung, the mandatory Swiss health cover) pays for it in the same way as physiotherapy in a practice, including the home visit itself.

Who it is for

Who benefits from physiotherapy at home?

01

After surgery or a hospital stay

After hip, knee or back surgery, getting to a practice is often the hardest part. Home treatment bridges the gap between hospital discharge and independent mobility.

02

Older adults

Strength, balance and safe movement are best trained where falls would actually happen. We work on stairs, transfers and everyday routines in your own home.

03

Neurological conditions

After a stroke, or with Parkinson's or multiple sclerosis, consistent therapy matters more than anything. Home visits make regular treatment realistic when transport is difficult.

04

For relatives organising care

Many of our enquiries come from sons, daughters and partners, often living abroad or in another canton. We handle coordination directly and keep you informed.

How it works

How it works

From prescription to first home visit, we coordinate every step and keep the same physiotherapist for your whole course of treatment.

  1. Get a prescription 1

    Get a prescription

    Your GP or hospital doctor issues a physiotherapy prescription (Verordnung, the doctor's referral). For home treatment it should state "Domizilbehandlung" (home treatment). If it does not, we clarify this with the doctor's practice for you.

  2. Send us your request 2

    Send us your request

    Upload the prescription as a photo or PDF, or contact us via WhatsApp or phone. We check availability in your area and reply the same working day.

  3. First appointment 3

    First appointment

    Usually within 48 hours. You keep the same physiotherapist for the whole course of treatment.

  4. Treatment and billing 4

    Treatment and billing

    A prescription typically covers nine sessions. We bill your health insurer directly. If further sessions are needed, we coordinate the follow-up prescription with your doctor.

Costs

Costs and Swiss health insurance

With a valid doctor's prescription, physiotherapy at home is covered by mandatory basic insurance (Grundversicherung), exactly like physiotherapy in a practice. The medically justified home visit is part of the covered service. There are no extra travel charges for you.

What you pay yourself are the standard cost shares of the Swiss system: your annual deductible (Franchise, the amount you pay before insurance starts) and a 10 percent co-payment (Selbstbehalt) up to the yearly legal maximum.

Without a prescription, treatment is possible on a self-pay basis. We are transparent about costs before we start. For insurance coverage, the route always leads through a doctor's prescription, and we are happy to help you organise it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Swiss basic insurance cover physiotherapy at home?

Yes. With a doctor's prescription that states home treatment is medically necessary, basic insurance covers physiotherapy at home the same way as treatment in a practice, subject to your deductible and co-payment.

Do I need a referral from a Swiss doctor?

Yes, a prescription from a doctor licensed in Switzerland is required for insurance coverage. Any GP or hospital doctor can issue it. If you do not have a GP yet, contact us and we will explain your options.

Do your physiotherapists speak English?

Our coordination team communicates in English, and we match you with a physiotherapist who can conduct the treatment in English wherever possible.

Which areas do you cover?

We treat patients at home across the canton of Zurich and Thurgau, including Zurich city, Winterthur and more than twenty surrounding municipalities. Send us your postcode and we will confirm availability.

How quickly can treatment start?

In most cases we can arrange the first home visit within 48 hours of receiving your prescription.

When to see a doctor first

Physiotherapy is the right path for many complaints, but some situations need medical assessment first. Contact a doctor or call 144 (Swiss emergency services) before arranging physiotherapy if you notice:

  • sudden paralysis, facial drooping or speech problems (possible stroke, call 144 immediately);
  • severe pain after a fall or accident with a possible fracture;
  • new numbness in the genital area or loss of bladder or bowel control together with back pain;
  • fever combined with severe back pain;
  • a rapidly swelling, red and painful leg.

This list does not replace medical advice. When in doubt: see a doctor first, then we organise the right therapy.
